Mayor: Friendship Baptist Church To Remain Closed For Now

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is writing the next chapter in the continuing dispute between two congregations sharing the same church building.
It's a story 6 News was first to bring you last week.  Two congregations are leveling verbal claims about financial matters and other issues.
When the Friendship Baptist Church was padlocked by members of one of the feuding congregations,  police officers were called and then the fire inspector ordered the building sealed until an inspection could determine the safety of the building.
Today the mayor's office issued this statement:
"In a continuation of an ongoing dispute over the ownership and control of Friendship Baptist Church in Lansing, church officials this morning cancelled a scheduled reinspection of the facility by the Lansing Fire Marshal. Church officials informed city officials that they were not prepared for the reinspection and requested its cancellation. Last weekend, the church was ordered closed due to fire code violations. The church will remain closed until the facility meets all city code requirements and city officials are permitted to inspect the facility to certify that it is in compliance."
