Renovation Rolls On At State Capitol

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Major renovation projects are underway at the State Capitol including the pending purchase of new chairs for the 110 members of the Michigan House. 6 News Capitol Correspondent Tim Skubick has more.

Lawmakers have allocated $3.1 million to modernize and spruce up the State Capitol.

Construction and renovation projects are everywhere.

With lawmakers back home campaigning they refurbishing the desks on the House floor.

Row by row the desks are being sent out for a new varnish job on the finish.

The Clerk of the House explains the desks have not been redone since restoration of the Capitol in 1994 and there is the normal wear and tear that is being repaired.

In addition, Clerk Gary Randall explains the current chairs on the House floor will be replaced next year because they are not ergonomically designed. But he doesn't know the price tag and the man who does was out of town but promises to discuss the new chair project when he returns.

Mr. Randall also wants to replace these red chairs that some lawmakers have requested because they are more comfortable.

In the meantime they just finished installing new air conditioning for the House and Senate.

They are readjusting the PH level of the grass on the Capitol lawn and replaced the old sidewalks.

They are ripping up the old Capitol steps and for about $90,000 they are installing new heating wires in the new steps to prevent them from freezing over during the harsh winter months.

That alone should add another 30 years of life for the steps which are a favorite gathering place for demonstrations.

This guard house at the entrance to the Capitol parking lot will reportedly be replaced in the near future and parking lot repairs are on the agenda.

The Capitol dome is in line for a fresh coat of paint and some roof repairs are on tap, too.

6 News attempted to interview several officials on these projects but everyone declined the offer.
