Authorities: 35 Cats Rescued From Detroit Home

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - Authorities say 35 cats have been rescued from a home on Detroit's east side where 60 dead cats also were found.

Detroit police spokeswoman Jennifer Moreno says it's unclear whether a person at the home will face charges. The Michigan Humane Society has an open investigation into Sunday's discovery.

Cindy Baumhart, a veterinarian with Rakestraw Animal Hospital in Detroit, gave Melanie Wittner with Hopeful Heart Rescue in Roseville a half-off discount to test the cats for diseases such as leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus after the rescue.

They're making sure the cats get proper care. Police say the home is considered dangerous, in part because of animal waste and insects inside.
