Living In The Shadow Of The Airport

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Home owners on Dewitt road in Lansing say they live in an awkward spot.

A row of four homes surrounded by Capital Region International Airport property.

Christa Lamendola went to the island of homes today to see what's behind this odd living arrangement

It's not exactly prime real estate.

Helen Albertson and her husband have lived in this house since the 60's and says they signed an agreement with the airport to eventually sell the house for an airport expansion project.

Now nearly 45 years later her real estate agent says the airport won't buy.

"What did the airport tell you? Might in the long term not in the short term," said Charlene McCallum of Keller Williams Real Estate.

So many other properties have been bought up by the airport that the homes are literally surrounded by airport property, with barbed wire fences right across the street.

As for the island of homes left, the airport says they don't have any record of the 1975 expansion agreement and without paperwork they're not interested.

Now with Helen Albertson's husband gone, real estate agent Charlene McCallum says the family is putting the house up for sale.

"It's been challenging the daughter and son in law have been paying the taxes and utilities etc- so for them they do wanna sell it. It would have been an easy slam dunk if the airport said yes," says McCallum.

And without proof of the agreement selling is the only other option.

The real estate agent says that the airport told them they won't even consider buying any property unless it's actually listed on the market.
