8th Congressional Candidates Face-off In Howell

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Candidates vying to fill Mike Rogers' 8th Congressional district seat spoke to voters last night during a special candidate forum.

Rogers, who chairs the House Intelligence committee, announced earlier this year he was not planning to seek re-election.

Four Democrats and two Republicans spoke at Howell High School on everything from abortion to the economy, hoping to win voters over.

Organizers say bringing all the candidates together is important so voters can build informed opinions based on information from the candidates themselves.

Organizers also add with Rogers leaving there will be big political shoes to fill.

"Obviously Mike has been there for a long time, and he has that institutional memory that these people won't have...they've got a diverse group running, so there's really somebody for everybody at this point, and it's just going to be a matter of how it shakes out. It's going to be an interesting campaign," said Marilyn Hysen, treasurer of the group Voter's Voice.

Another forum will take place at Howell High School on July first.
