MMP Bomb Threat & Arrest

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - A peaceful ending to a dangerous standoff that brought bomb squads and SWAT teams to a home in Meridian Township

In that home was a man accused of robbing a local pharmacy by telling employees he had explosives strapped to his chest.

The robbery took place at the Mid-Michigan Physicians office on Lake Lansing Road shortly after 12-o'clock this afternoon.

After the robbery the suspect went to his Haslett home and refused to come out.

With weapons drawn and bomb squads on high alert officials took no gambles with safety.

Before holing himself up in a condo on Nemoke Trail in Haslett officials say a man in his early 60s robbed the Mid-Michigan Physicians' pharmacy for narcotics.

He got the drugs when he said he had a bomb strapped to his chest.

"All of a sudden someone came to my office door and said to get out there's a bomb in the building," said Cindy Galusha, of Mid-Michigan Physicians.

The suspect left the scene but officials quickly found him at his condo where neighbors say things like this just don't happen.

"It is a bit odd. This street in particular is very quiet, so yes, I would say it's a little unnerving," said neighbor Omar Karim.

For both neighbors and police the situation grew more tense by the minute as the suspect refused to come out of his home.

But officials kept everything under control and several hours later negotiators got him to surrender.

"He finally decided to give up. I think he'd been pretty cooperative throughout all the conversation and it was just a question of actually getting him to come out,"Lt. Greg Frenger, Meridian Township Police.

Once he did officials arrested him and turned him over to authorities in Lansing Township where the robbery happened.

No one was hurt in the robbery or the standoff and so far officials say they haven't found any explosives at either scene.

A crazy day is now a quiet night and officials hope to keep it that way.
