"Fix Our Roads" Tour Stops In Lansing

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - An international union group's prop rolled into Lansing today.

It's the third stop for the "fix our roads" tour.

Road funding is a hot topic nationwide and especially here in Michigan which is why Michigan laborers gathered at the Capitol with a hard hitting message.

Union workers from Local 499 stood by a school bus with a prop to represent a fallen bridge.

The message is part of campaign by Laborers' International Union of North America to call on Congress to pass a highway bill this year

and Local 499 members says they're ready for work here in Michigan.

In Ingham County 34 percent of bridges are either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete and Michigan can't afford to wait to fix this problem.

"About a third of our hours in the state of Michigan come from roads, we could employ a lot of people, get them back to work, employ their families and be able to spend that money in local areas and get businesses moving again," says Dan Minton, Local 499.

Representative Sam Singh was in attendance and actually apologized for being there, saying he'd rather been in session getting a road package done.

We'll have more on the fight over fixing Michigan's roads on 6 News at 5 and 6.
