Water Main Bursts In Haslett

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Water main burst in Haslett and water poured into the street for more than 12 hours.

It happened right near Lake Lansing and today people who live in the affected area not only have a lake in the back but in their front yards as well.

Konny Zsigo says he has a new lake view from his house in Meridian Township, but it's not of Lake Lansing."This is now Lake Zsigo over here."

It's his neighbors lawn across the street- now flooded from a water main break.

Zsigo added,"It got increasingly more serious as we're seeing water jot out from the bottom of the street. We actually saw the asphalt start to bubble and blister. It looked like one of those crazy movies where the road was going to collapse."

Officials with Meridian Township say the break was a main service line causing thousands of gallons of water to pour across the street.

These lawns literally look like lakes and neighbors say it's because the water was running all night. Even though the break happened around 8pm last night- the water wasn't shut off until 10 this morning.

Joe Vandommelen with the Township water department says that's because they had a tough time fixing it with a weekend crew.

He said, "Unfortunately last night we weren't able to get a full crew in. We had three guys but that's not enough to safely do an escavation like this especially in the dark."

Vandommelen says everything is fixed now but water still floods the area.

And Zsigo is worried it's only temporary fix.

Saying this is the second break they've had on the street in a year.

Zsigo says, "The pipe underneath the road is pretty old now; it's starting to get deteriorated. So this could start happening over and over."

Water service to affected homes has been restored tonight.

And fortunately no one had flooding inside their homes.
