Maggots Found In Michigan Prison

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MI (WLNS) - The problems for food services inside Michigan prisons continue.

"This past Friday we did in our serving line, at that correctional facility uncover some fly larvae and maggots," said MDOC Spokesman Russ Marlan.

Russ Marlan tells 6 News, prisoners alerted staff at the Parnall Correctional Facility that they had seen maggots near the serving line.

The department says they learned an area near the line hadn't properly been caulked, which is what they believe led to the infestation.

The line has since been shut down and prison cells have been cleaned with bleach.

So far 30 prisoners have been found with health issues from diarrhea to vomiting.

Marlan says they can't confirm that was a result of bad food served through Aramark, but say the serving line and area near their equipment is the responsibility of the Philadelphia company.

MDOC has been in contact with Aramark who told them they are aware of the issue.

Just last week 71 employees were given "stop notices",  banning them from entering correctional facilities for violating parts of their contract with the state. Two more employees have since been added to the list.
