Woman Receives Snow Removal Violation Four Years Later

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WLNS) - With temperatures soaring into the 80's, a snow removal violation is about the last thing you'd expect in the mail.

A Lansing woman was in court Monday after receiving one, four years after the fact.

6 News Christa Lamendola talked to her about the cold situation.

Temperatures in the 80's are not exactly the perfect conditions for a snow storm. But just days into summer, Joanne Gram got a notice in the mail saying she had a court date for a snow and ice removal violation.

“What was puzzling particularly to me was that it was for January 22, 2010, which is over four years ago,” said Joanne Gram, received four-year-old snow violation.

She says the violation was for failing to shovel her sidewalk.

“In the winter of course I walk to work every day anyways.” That’s something she has to do in order to walk to work.

We had our 6 News weather team look at the archived weather reports for January 22, 2010.

They say no snow fell on that day, but three inches were on the ground from an earlier snow storm.

According to the 2010 ordinance from the city of Lansing, Gram could face fines even though she never received the original violation notice.

But she's worried she won't be able to prove she shoveled in court.

“Do I have to prove my innocence? How do I do that? I don't certainly take pictures every time I shovel, date them and put them aside.”

Gram did go to court Monday to dispute the issue with a judge and he says he's not even sure if the violation was physically sent to her.

Now she says that she has another court appearance coming up on the topic and she's looking forward to disputing the issue.

We reached out to the city of Lansing Public Service Department to learn more about the situation, but have not heard back for comment.
