Lansing Officials Investigate Grand River Oil Spill

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WLNS) – The city of Lansing, along with state officials, are investigating an oil spill into the Grand River that was discovered Thursday night. Officials say the oil came from a city sewer near the Brenke Fish Ladder.

According to Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and officials with the Lansing Fire Department, less than five gallons have been collected. The source of the oil spill before it reached the sewer is unclear.

Lansing Police Chief Mike Yankowski said this is being treated as a criminal investigation, although no suspects have been named.

Officials say there is no imminent threat to the public. Booms to clean up the oil are in the river and are being changed every 12 hours.
