Jackson Police Investigating Homicide

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MICH. (WLNS) - Jackson Police are investigating a homicide after they say they found a body next to a dumpster at Reed Manor Apartment Complex Saturday at 6:13 a.m.

That's in the 300 block of Steward Avenue.

Police say they have a suspect in custody doesn't make the news easier on the family.

The family says the victim is their mother and sister 50-year-old Violet Mcelroy and her sudden death has left them in shock.

Police say they're currently interviewing witnesses like Rebecca Lovejoy who says she saw a suspicious red truck pull into the complex last night.

"The officers asked me exactly what I had seen. I told them the truck and that two guys got out and unloaded something that I thought was a roll of carpet or a blanket," said Lovejoy.

Family members identified the body at the scene. The brother of the victim  Joseph Hughes says he came into town from Colorado to celebrate Independence Day with his family, but didn't expect an event like this to happen.

"It's just hard for me right now you know. Finding out that my sister died the way she died. A violent death. Nobody deserves that," said Hughes.

Hughes says his sister was a very religious and smart woman.

He says he just spoke with her last night and she quoted a bible verse saying, "God comes like a thief in the night."

"He evidentially came like a thief in the night last night. You know. Bless her soul. Hopefully she's in heaven right now," said Hughes.

Family says Mcelroy was a loving mother who leaves behind three children, 12 grandchildren and two brothers and sisters.
