Loitering Crackdown At CATA Center

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - A new loitering ordinance is in place to address drug problems at the CATA Transportation Center in downtown Lansing.

But some riders say they're worried police will target the wrong people.

Riders say the CATA transportation center is a rumored hot spot for drugs.

They're being strict and getting all the riff raff out of here.

Now Lansing police say there might be some truth to that rumor. They say a drug investigation at the CATA Transportation Center downtown triggered some serious action--- a drug loitering ordinance that makes it illegal to wait in certain spots near the station.

Saul Gonzales is a CATA bus rider. "Waiting for their grandma waiting for their sister and then they say, 'oh you've gotta go."

Those found loitering under the thirty-day ordinance can be arrested and sent to jail with fines up to five hundred dollars.

CATA rider Zane Matthews asked, "How do you weed out and know who's the drug dealer and who's just smoking a cigarette waiting around for their bus?"

Matthews says security guards have asked him to move several times when he was smoking on the sidewalk.

CATA says they posted no loitering signs around the station back in February saying,  quote:

"In an effort to help keep our facility and property safe for customers and citizens"

And they're not just cracking down on on people that are hanging out in clearly marked no loitering spaces. They're also cracking down on people that are found waiting around within a block of the intersections of East Kalamazoo and Grand Avenue and Washington and Lenawee Street.

But police say an ordinance like this is not out of the ordinary when it comes to stopping drug related crimes. They say they have similar ordinances in about 25 other locations throughout the city.

Lansing police say they're not just arresting anyone but are starting off with warnings and then arresting repeat offenders.
