Common Ground Festival Gearing Up For Opening

Posted: Updated:
LANSING ,MI (WLNS) - As the Common Ground Music Festival kicks off on Tuesday, organizers prepare for a week-long event that will generate more than $3 million for the local economy. However, this year's event will run only six days, down from a full seven days.

"We just felt it would be easier to push it to start on a Tuesday. Not many people would want to come down on a Monday. They've got to get back to work," said Jenna Meyer, marketing director of the Common Ground Music Festival. "It also came down to talent. There wasn't much talent that was available on Monday, so we're not going to produce a show that's not going to be a good show."

This year's festival also continues a trend of targeting a younger crowd, which some have criticized. "
Our response to 'we don't have as much classic rock as before,' yes, you're right. Unfortunately, a lot of those acts are no longer touring. They're no longer together as a full band. So, you know, sometimes it just doesn't work as well to bring some of those bands through."

For bands that are touring, organizers say making a decision comes down to availability and cost.
"It mainly starts with what artists are available and what price do they cost to bring them in," said Meyer.
