DEWIITT TWP., MI (WLNS) - Summer vacation is the perfect time to get out of the house and relax. But while many have been itching to leave their homes, summer thieves are using vacations as a reason to break in.
The DeWitt Township Police Department says they've seen an unusually high number of breaking and entering cases this summer, about 10 in the past two weeks.
“We've been experiencing more breaking and entering recently and they're all over the township. It's not just one location or one street it's all over,” said Police Chief Brian Russell, DeWitt Township Police.
The thieves have been taking valuables, jewelry, electronics and guns. But they're not shy about who they are.
Those burglars hit several homes on one street, but police say the interesting part of this was that they actually knew the homeowners and talked to them to find out when they were out of town.
“They'll say well ok you know that money you loaned me. I wanna pay you back and then they pick a time and the people say we'll I’m not going to be home at that time,” said Police Chief Russell.
DeWitt Township police say they're not the only ones looking for the sweet talking suspects. They say Clinton County, Ingham County, Eaton County and Lansing police have had similar crimes in their areas also matching the suspect’s descriptions.
Police say they're looking for two men in their 20's, both around 6 feet tall. One had red hair.
They say the suspects may be driving a white convertible or a maroon van. If you're worried about your house while you're on vacation, police say call them and they'll stop by to check on your house.
