Fire Breaks Out Near Leslie Plating Company

Posted: Updated:

LESLIE, MI (WLNS) - Firefighters had their hands full Tuesday night and are currently working into Wednesday morning at a huge fire in Leslie.

It happened shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Bellevue Street and Covert Street, near ISC Plating in Leslie.

A HAZMAT team was also working in the area. Homes and buildings had to be evacuated. People were sent to Leslie Elementary for shelter.

Officials also asked residents in the area to turn off air conditioners and close all windows.

Fire departments from Ingham, Eaton, Jackson and Livingston Counties responded to the scene to battle the fire.

Officials were concerned about environmental protection and water runoff. About 250,000 gallons of water from 17 tankers were used to fight the fire. Officials were worried that some of that water could get into the sewer system. The fire is under control at this time, but is still going on. Officials ran tests on the water and air quality. So far tests show no contamination of either air or water, which means firefighters can now focus on putting out the fire.
