Air Force Tanker Makes Emergency Landing

Posted: Updated:
FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A U.S. Air Force KC-135 air refueling plane has made an emergency landing on the runway at Sawyer International Airport in the central Upper Peninsula.

Greg Peterson tells The Associated Press he watched the landing about 5 p.m. Tuesday and says it appeared to be completely normal.

The plane had 6,000 gallons of fuel and a crew of three aboard. The station says the plane was from Milwaukee and was taking part in a touch-and-go landing drill when it had a hydraulic problem.

The airport is in Marquette County's Forsyth Township and is at the site of the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, which operated from 1956 to 1995.

Sawyer Manager Duane DuRay says the plane radioed air controllers about 25 minutes before touching down.
