Original Biggby Re-Design Project On Hold

Posted: Updated:
EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) - There could be some new changes made to the original Biggby on Grand River Avenue.

6 News Alexandra Ilitch has the latest updates on what you can expect next. It’s called the gateway project, which will cause the original Biggby in East Lansing to not be so original anymore.

The proposed project includes the building of about 150 residential units, and a revamped Biggby location with a drive thru.

For loyal customers like Leo Poroshin, rebuilding this particular Biggby location just wouldn’t be the same.

"This is the kinda place where people come to relax, to hangout, to meet with friends. I’m not sure as convenient as a drive thru may be, there are other Biggby locations that have it, but none of them has a uniqueness of this place, the originality and the communal spirit,” said Leo Poroshin, Biggby customer.

Since the project has been at a stand-still, Paul Anderson, manager of the Biggby, says he doesn't think it will ever follow through because within the past few months, many of the store's features have been renovated.

"This location, it’s the heart of the city. And so I can't see them tampering with it at all,” said Anderson.

The plans to tear down the original Biggby are on hold as developers of DTN Management are going back to the drawing board to make some design changes.

"One of the difficult things with any redevelopment plan is to balance the needs of the community, meet the code requirements and also meet the financial requirements for demolition for the property and redevelopment,” said Darcy Schmitt, planning and zoning administrator for East Lansing.

The estimated cost of this project is expected to be $15-20 million.
