Man Pleads No Contest In Accidental Shooting Death

Posted: Updated:
MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) - An 18-year-old from Muskegon has pleaded no contest to several charges in the accidental shooting death of his friend.

Vance T. Thompson will likely serve between seven and 17 years in prison for fatally shooting 17-year-old Charles "C.J." White, Jr. last November.

Police say Thompson accidentally shot White while the two were horsing around with a gun, then he fled the scene and tried to dispose of the gun.

Thompson will be sentenced for involuntary manslaughter, evidence tampering and possessing a firearm during a felony. A "no contest" plea isn't an admission of guilt but allows for conviction.

Muskegon County Circuit Judge Timothy G. Hicks scheduled sentencing for Aug. 20.
