Money Pours Into Land v. Peters Senate Race

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - The race for one of Michigan US Senate seats is heating up and it's being fueled by millions of dollars in donations.

Candidates Gary Peters and Terri Lynn Land reported their latest campaign donations for the second quarter of this year and Land is out-raising her opponent by more than $1.2 million.

Peters raised $1.96 million in the second quarter. That represents his strongest fundraising quarter since he entered the race. His campaign says two-thirds of those donations were less than $25.

Land reportedly has more than $5.25 million cash on hand in her campaign war chest.

The Peters campaign claims to lead in the last seven polls despite being outspent by a 2-to-1 margin.

The Land camp says there's a reason the candidate has such strong financial backing. "Terri Lynn Land has outraised Congressman Peters every quarter because Michiganders are looking for a U.S. Senator who will put Michigan first and stop the job-killing policies that are coming from Congressman Peters and his allies in Washington D.C.," said Heather Swift, spokeswoman for the Land campaign.

Building grassroots support is the strategy in which the Peters campaign will rely. "Our campaign is building a powerful team of thousands of Michigan middle class families, small business owners, veterans, and students who know that Gary is the only one they can count on to put Michigan first," said Peters campaign manager Paul Tencher.
