Man Gets Year In Jail In Detroit Mob Beating

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - A judge who was influenced by a young Detroit man's apology has sentenced the 24-year-old to a year in jail for his part in a mob attack that left a motorist in a coma for days.

James Davis' sentence today was below the guidelines of 19 to 38 months in prison. Wayne County Judge James Callahan says he was impressed with Davis' remorse.

Davis is one of five people to plead guilty to assault in the April 2 beating of Steve Utash in Detroit. The tree trimmer was attacked after getting out of his pickup truck to help a boy who was struck while darting in front of Utash's vehicle.

Utash still is recovering from his injuries and wasn't in court. Davis pledged that he won't break the law again.
