Haslett Baby Diagnosed With Rare Disease On Way To Treatment

Posted: Updated:
HASLETT, MI (WLNS) - A young baby in Haslett who has been diagnosed with a rare disease will now be able to get the treatment that may save his life.

6 News Alexandra Ilitch visited the family Friday and has that story.

Dominic is an 11-month-old who suffers from a very rare form of the disease Hirschsprung's, which is a disorder of the abdomen that causes his small intestine and digestive tract to not work properly.

On Sunday Dominic, his twin brother Vincent and mother Alison will travel to Boston. So that Dominic can receive the specific treatment that he needs to survive.

"Omegaven is Dominic’s only chance to be healthy," said Alison Lathrop, mother.

"We've been wanting this moment for quite a long time now. We've had setbacks and other things get in the way,” said Andrew Lathrop, father.

The doctors describe Dominic’s case as one in a million, after being diagnosed with the disease about one year ago, the Lathrop’s finally found what they think could be the answer.

"It’s very scary and he’s very small, I mean even if Omegaven only bought us some time for him to grow before we had to face a bigger challenge, then it’s worth it for us,” said Alison Lathrop, mother.

Alison and Andrew are both looking forward to getting Dominic into treatment. As of now they have high hopes.

Little Dominic here will be undergoing treatment for about six weeks. Andrew and Alison, Dominic’s parents are hoping to come home with a happy and healthy baby

"It would be amazing to bring him home and know that we're on the right track and he’s healthy and ya know we can just, just relax for a little bit and be a family,” said Alison.

Dominic’s treatment will start right away on Monday. If it works successfully it will be the answer to Dominic’s survival.

A fundraiser for 11-month-old Dominic Lathrop, will take place from 5 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, at XIAO restaurant, 3415 E Saginaw St, Lansing.
