Organizers: Common Ground Big Success This Year

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - As Common Ground wraps up the final night and organizers are already calling this year's event a bigger success than last year's despite running one less day.

More than seven thousand people were expected to visit the festival grounds Sunday night and about 50 thousand for the week,  just one of many reasons why organizers say this year's event is among the best.

As the smooth and soulful sounds of Earth, Wind & Fire serenaded the crowds on the final night of common ground organizers say they couldn't be more pleased. Jenna meyer, marketing director for Common Ground, says, "It's cool to be able to see acts like Earth, Wind & Fire in your home town, so we're just excited to bring that to Lansing."

Almost as excited as the fans are to have them. Marcella White was ready for the band. "This is on my bucket list, to meet Earth, Wind & Fire, to see them."

So was Lori Littlejohn, "I'm glad it turned out to be a nice evening, and the crowd, they're ready."

Something organizers have been saying all week. Each night brought out thousands of music lovers, with Friday drawing in a crowd of nearly 10-thousand people, and Tuesday bringing in lots of people from out of town.

"We were pretty close to 20 percent tuesday night of out-of-staters. They're coming in, they're staying at the hotels in Lansing and in the regional area as well. They're going to restaurants, they're shopping, all that."

One reason why the festival has such a big effect on the local economy. "Three to four million is generally what we see each year in economic impact."

An impact officials hope will keep Common Ground in the Capital City for years to come.

"We're just excited to be able to bring that to Lansing and have people come out for a week and have a great time."

Just because Common Ground is over doesn't mean the work is done. Organizers say planning for next year's festival starts on Monday.
