Michigan Plans To Up Charter School Accountability

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Michigan's superintendent is meeting with charter school backers as he works to hold institutions accountable for schools they authorize.

State Superintendent Mike Flanagan emailed meeting invitations Friday to officials at universities, community colleges and school districts that authorize more than three charter schools. A similar invitation was sent to charter advocacy groups for a separate meeting this month.

Flanagan said earlier this month he intends to start banning poor-performing authorizers from granting new charters. He says in his email to school officials that meeting attendees will discuss procedures for suspending an authorizer.

Representatives from Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State universities say they will attend.
