Goodrich’s Shop-Rite Closes Doors After 77 Years

Posted: Updated:
EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) - After seven decades of service to people in mid-Michigan, they're just days away from shutting their doors for good.

Goodrich's Shop-Rite in East Lansing has been around for 77 years. But, after failing to reach an agreement with a developer the family-owned business will shut their doors on Saturday, July 19.

6 News Nick Perreault talked with loyal shoppers who say the staff and store will not be forgotten.

Customers are getting their hands on whatever they can find before Goodrich’s Shop-Rite closes their doors. "For the fresh produce, their fish and meat were the greatest and flowers and fruits and vegetables.”

New development is taking over, leaving shelves empty and long-time customer Barbara Hollstein in tears.

"It's not just a shopping place. It was a gathering place and you could find people when you could never find them in their office,” said Barbara Hollstein, regular customer.

This is a sad realization for co-owner Mary-Beth Scheffel, who says it’s too tough to go on camera.

"It's like a death in the family, those are strong words, it is after 70 years, it's tough,” said Mary-Beth Scheffel, co-owner, Goodrich’s.

Ultimately these shelves will be stocked by another company, but the people 6 News spoke with say it's not about losing what's on the shelves, but the people inside, that's what they're going to miss.

"This is where you come and they'll ask you, can I see your list?  And they'll take you to the shelve where the baking soda is, not wave their arm and say I think it's over there somewhere.”

Personal family service that these customers say is a rare find in a grocery store.

"The people are all so helpful and so nice, it's a big loss for the community,” said Peggy Murphy, regular customer.

And a loss that Scheffel says doesn't have plans to open up somewhere else.

"At our ages, you can't go into heavy debt to move and get new equipment and stuff like this, this is not the way we wanted to go out, but I'm going to miss every one of them.”

As they say, Goodrich's could see the writing on the wall to move on, but the walls are covered with happy customers to make sure they'll always be remembered for their service.
