Jury Selection Starts In Football Player Slaying

Posted: Updated:
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Jury selection has started in the trial of a man in the fatal shooting of Eastern Michigan University football player Demarius Reed.

statements could take place Tuesday if a jury is picked Monday in Washtenaw County Trial Court. Judge Donald Shelton says 21-year-old Ed Thomas of Detroit rejected an offer of a plea deal.

On Friday, 20-year-old Kristopher Pratt of Detroit pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He agreed to testify against Thomas.

Pratt told the court that he and Thomas followed Reed into an apartment building last fall with the intention of robbing the 20-year-old wide receiver from Chicago. Pratt says he shot Reed twice.

A defense lawyer has said there isn't enough evidence to show Thomas committed the crime.
