LANSING, MI (WLNS) - The Red Cross is asking donors to roll up their sleeves this July and August. Vacations and summer breaks for students have caused blood donations to take a significant hit this time of year.
The summer months always see a downward trend in donations, but the local Red Cross told 6 News this summer is one of the worst they've seen in years.
The American Red Cross has issued a National Urgent Appeal for blood and platelet donors in order to try and prevent an emergency blood shortage.
“In the past 11 weeks we've seen blood donations decrease by about 8 percent with the American Red Cross. That equals about 80,000 units,” said Todd Kulman, Red Cross.
