Jury Finds Lansing Man Guilty Of Criminal Sexual Conduct

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WLNS) - A 38-year-old Lansing man has been found guilty of criminal sexual conduct for a 2012 incident with a minor.

Clifford Sleeper stood before an Ingham County jury Tuesday afternoon. 6 News Nick Perreault was in the court room and has the latest on the verdict.

Clifford sleeper, 38 was found guilty in a Lansing courtroom on all six counts against him.

"One of the most telling messages in his texts were ‘I feel like a teenager again,” said Detective Shannon Thielen, Lansing Police Department.

Detective Shannon Thielen and prosecutors say Clifford Sleeper had an on again, off again relationship as friends with a minor for years, but when she turned 14 that relationship turned sexual.

"He admitted several times in his cell phone records and Facebook messages several times that he had been in a sexual relationship with this juvenile.”

Detective Thielen says that lasted about four months, but when the teen decided to stop when she started high school, Sleeper didn't back off.

"The defendant in this case became increasing obsessive over the victim.”

Prosecutors say he began reaching out to her friends over Facebook under a fake name claiming to be a teenager to find out where the victim was staying.

"He would pay those friends money, pay juvenile’s money to get her to come out to his truck and talk to him.”

Detective Thielen says he even admitted the relationship to her mother.

"Why would a 38-year-old man be very proud of being in a relationship with a 14-year-old girl, that didn't make sense to her.”

The mother didn't report it. Detective Thielen says this is a reminder, no matter how strange if something doesn't seem right whether you're a parent or child, alert the authorities.

Clifford Sleeper could face up to 15 years behind bars. As of now he sits in Ingham County Jail without bond.

Sleeper’s sentencing is set for August. 6 News spoke to a friend of Sleeper's who says he's shocked to hear this happened. Sleeper's attorney denied our interview request.
