400 Jobs: Auto Parts Plant To Build In Clinton County

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Hundreds of new manufacturing jobs are heading to mid-Michigan once a Grand Rapids auto supplier builds a new plant in Clinton County's Watertown Township. It's move that will benefit not only that area but Lansing as well.

Just beyond the wild plants and shrubs is a 33 acre plot of land with lots of promise. Construction will move quickly, according to Watertown Township manager Jennifer Tubbs. "I think this is probably going to be the fastest construction project we've ever seen. They would have liked to have broken ground yesterday."

Watertown Township officials say they've worked closely with Grand Rapids-based Challenge Manufacturing to help the company expand here in the area. The auto supplier plans to build a brand new plant where they'll make parts for General Motors which will bring some major economic benefits.

Tubbs details the economic impact. "It means $65 million in investment, and that will directly relate to taxable dollars to use for infrastructure and supporting of the township."

"The 420 new jobs are so important to this region and to the local economy that we can measure the success we've had in Watertown, but it's even a bigger success for the community as a whole. The township board was extremely supportive with the tax abatement, and that will help support the company, and bring these new jobs to the area."

Mainstream manufacturing jobs that local economic development officials say will support the working-class of mid-Michigan. "It's great news for hundreds and hundreds of families who are going to have jobs. And this is the best kind of economic development of all. These are brand new jobs. These aren't moving from somewhere, they're not being transferred. These are brand new jobs for our state, country and of course, local economy."
