Server Crashes East Lansing Phone System

Posted: Updated:
EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) - Phones were ringing at East Lansing City Hall Thursday, but that wasn't the case on Wednesday.

Our Mariah Harrison found out why crucial phone service in East Lansing was cut off on Wednesday.

Any person living in East Lansing trying to make a call to one of the city's public service buildings will hear a whole lot of this – silence, or in some cases a busy tone. According to the city manager the trouble started Tuesday night.

"One of the servers that the phone system was installed on began to die and that actually took the entire phone system down,” said George Lahanas, City Manager, East Lansing.

George Lahanas says by Wednesday service buildings including the police department, city hall, and the East Lansing Fire Department had no dial tone. However emergency service remained in-tact.

"911 was not affected at all. At no time was our emergency service dispatch center down.”

Turns out calls made to 911 out of East Lansing are routed through Ingham County on a completely different phone system.

“Really it was a customer service issue for us.”

Lahanas says this isn't the first time he's seen this happen in East Lansing.

“Several times probably in the 15 years that I’ve been here, it's, you know pretty rare because these things are made for enterprises they're made to stay up and running all the time."

The East Lansing Public Library and the Hannah Community Center are also involved in the phone outage.

Library officials say no phones no problem.

“We've had probably a little more foot traffic than we normally do because people know that they cannot call,” said Jennifer Amormino, Executive Assistant to Director, East Lansing Public Library.

But at least at the library, they're used to the silence.

Officials tell us the city has replaced the server and apologize for any inconvenience.
