Authorities Find Nearly 15,000 Marijuana Plants

Posted: Updated:

COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say they found nearly 15,000 marijuana plants at an illegal growing site in southwestern Michigan.

Lt. Wayne Edington of the Michigan State Police and Southwest Enforcement Team says officers received a tip July 29 about the marijuana. Local media report that police on Friday went to the site in Covert Township.

Edington says they found a camp at the site and two men with guns tending the plants. The men fled when officers approached. They're being sought. Edington described the use of a camp at the site as unusual for such growing operations in the area.

Edington says the plants have been destroyed. Tips are being sought from the public. In 2012, police found about 1,800 marijuana plants being grown in Covert Township.
