Police: Michigan Officers Shoot, Kill Man

Posted: Updated:

ADRIAN, Mich. (AP) - Michigan authorities say an officer who shot and killed a man in Lenawee County acted in self-defense.

Michigan State Police and county authorities said Wednesday that Lenawee County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the home of a 54-year-old man suffering from an unspecified mental illness Tuesday in Fairfield Township near Adrian. They were attempting to enforce a court order for hospitalization.

Police say three deputies entered the man's house and found him holding a shotgun. They repeatedly told him to put down the weapon. Police say the deputies fired when the man pointed the shotgun at them.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities haven't released his name.

The three deputies in the house and a fourth deputy have been placed on administrative leave, following standard protocol.
