Guard Stabbed Several Times At Jackson-Area Prison

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - Michigan says an inmate used a prison-made weapon to stab a guard multiple times at a prison near Jackson.

The Michigan Corrections Department said Thursday that the guard was in a hospital, but was expected to be released soon.

Department spokesman Russ Marlan says the attack happened at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility. The facility was put into an immediate lockdown, which means no prisoner movement.  It will remain in lockdown until further notice. The employee was a Resident Unit Manager at the correctional facility and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The employee is still being treated, but is expected to be discharged soon.

Marlan says the inmate used "an ice pick prison-made weapon" to attack a resident unit manager at the prison.

The inmate responsible for the attack was immediately identified and has been moved to a higher level correctional facility.

The incident is under investigation by the Michigan Department of Corrections and Michigan State Police.
