Estimated 18,000 Warren Homes Damaged By Flooding

Posted: Updated:
WARREN, Mich. (AP) - City assessors say an estimated 18,000 homes in Warren have sustained some type of flood damage following a massive rainfall that left basements, freeways and streets under several feet of water.

Mayor James Fouts said Thursday that damage from Monday's storm in the city of 134,000 is "more widespread than anyone thought" and "every neighborhood has been hit."

The storm dumped more than 6 inches of rain on parts of southeastern Michigan and 5.2 inches on Warren, just north of Detroit. Hundreds of vehicles stalled out or were abandoned on interstates and surface streets.

Gov. Rick Snyder has issued a disaster declaration for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. That allows Michigan to seek help from the federal government and frees up state resources for communities hardest hit by the flooding.
