MPSC: Making Propane Plans For Winter

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - The Michigan Public Service Commission released a tip sheet today for those who use propane to heat their homes.

Officials are urging households to prepare now to get ready for winter.

The tip sheet includes information on fixed and variable pricing plans.  Budget plans, pre-pay plans and fixed-price plans can offer savings when compared to buying at market price.   The mpsc recommends that you know your tank size and your typical propane usage.   That information can help you get the best price and avoid over-or under-buying.   Always make sure you read your contract and fully understand the terms and conditions.   Don't sign anything until you understand it fully.

The sheet also recommends that consumers be clear on any fees and other charges.   There might be installation charges, service charges, equipment rental fees or minimum annual usage requirements.   Be certain your propane supplier fully explains any potential charges to you before you sign any contracts.   Additional fees can have a significant impact on your out-of-pocket costs.

The MPSC recommends that you make sure you understand your delivery options.   Many propane retailers have a keep-full option that will automatically refill your tank based on usage.   Others allow you to call for refills.   Always be certain of how much advance time to allow to arrange for delivery.

The MPSC recommends some good questions to ask if you are comparing propane dealers:

What service and payment options do you provide?

Do you offer a monthly budget plan?

What fees or other charges will be added on? ask for a written list.

Do I have to call when I need propane, or will you schedule my delivery? If I call you for delivery, how much notice do you need?

Sometimes things don't go well and there are problems.   To file a consumer complaint, contact the Michigan Attorney General's office at 1-877-765-8388 or michigan.gov/ag .
