Lansing Hosts Job Fair

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WLNS) - From the minute the doors opened hundreds filed into the Lansing Center Tuesday with resumes in hand for the city of Lansing's first ever job fair.

The city is looking to fill about 50 positions and as 6 News Nick Perreault explains, after Tuesday, they'll have a tough time choosing the right candidates.

"Clerical positions, we have drivers, we have maintenance, we have a few supervisors, customer service.”

With close to 50 open positions, some part time, some full time, hundreds lined up for their chance for a new career.

"The economy created a large amount positions through attrition, we have a lot of people retiring at this point,” said Terri Taylor, Lansing Director, Human Resources.

As they say someone's loss is another person's gain.

After filling out an application and scrolling the job board, Ian Mcvaugh-Bailey hopes he'll fit one of those positions.

"I was in the Michigan State Police, I did not complete training, it just wasn't for me, it was a little rough,” said Ian Mcvaugh-Bailey, job applicant.

Bailey says he's looking for a more stable job and hopes to take his EMT skills to work for Lansing's fire or police departments.

"The fire departments I've worked for is pay on call, it's not as much public service as I want to do,” said Mcvaugh-Bailey.

"I filled out all my applications and now I'm ready to head hunt.”

While Ashley Tamsen went to the job fair for a clerk or administrative assistant opening.

I'm “looking for a change of pace, kind of use my degree that I have,” said Ashley Tamsen, Grand Ledge resident.

The city hopes to fill some of these openings as soon as September and says this doesn't' look like a one-time deal.

"If it works out, I'm hoping to have a second annual job fair.”
