Officials Urge Fire Caution Over Holiday Weekend

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Officials say despite recent rain, conditions will be right for wildfires during the Labor Day weekend.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says natural fuels such as grass and leaves are approaching the end of their growing season.

Once dead, they dry out quickly. If they catch fire, they'll burn fast. Brisk winds can cause a small fire to grow into an out-of-control inferno.

The DNR has responded to 158 wildfires that have burned more than 525 acres this year.

Fire prevention specialist Dan Laux says a few simple precautions can prevent wildfires. They include never leaving a fire unattended, having water available and drowning campfire completely when leaving.
