Charter School Authorizers Propose Evaluation Plan

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Authorizers of Michigan's charter schools have proposed establishing a voluntary accreditation system after state education officials cited performance, transparency and oversight deficiencies for one quarter of them.

The Michigan Council of Charter School Authorizers announced its plan Friday, which was submitted to the Department of Education. It would create a commission to evaluate charter authorizers in nine categories and recommend suspension for those deemed to be not accredited.

The department this month put 11 chartering agents on notice of possible suspension. They have until Oct. 22 to fix their issues.

State Superintendent Mike Flanagan announced last earlier he would review Michigan's 40 chartering agents after a Detroit Free Press investigation questioned charter oversight.

The council is composed of 10 chartering agents but includes authorizers of the majority of charter schools.
