A piece of the past will soon be restored in mid-Michigan.
A century old locomotive is making a nearly 500 mile journey to it’s new home in Owosso.
The Chicago and North Western Railway 175 was purchased by the Steam Railroading Institute of Owosso last year.
Contractors and volunteers are hoping to fix it up and bring it back to operating condition.
The 175 hauled both freight and passenger trains in the iron-mining territory of Michigan’s upper peninsula and Wisconsin until the mid-1950’s when diesel technology became more efficient.
It is the only C&NW locomotive in Michigan and one of onl three R1’s in existence that was made available to the Steam Railroading Institute by it’s owner, Mineral Range Inc.
You can check it out for yourself. It will be on display at the Steam Railroading Institute this weekend.
