Michigan Small Business Survival Grant Program to provide $55 million in grants for COVID-19 relief efforts

LANSING, Mich.(WLNS) The Michigan Strategic Fund approved two grant programs today – the Michigan Small Business Survival Grants and the Michigan Stages Survival Grants – totaling $58.5 million in relief to help meet the urgent needs of small businesses and live event venues impacted by the COVID-19 virus, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced.

The State of Michigan appropriated the funds signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on December 29th, to implement the programs to support Michigan’s small businesses that have been especially impacted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

MSU’s 2021 MLK Day Celebration honors late U.S. Congressman John Lewis with theme: “Good Trouble”

EAST LANSING, Mich (WLNS) Michigan State University’s 41st annual celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will take place virtually beginning January 17, 2021. The weeklong collection of events is open to the public. The 2021 MLK celebration’s theme is “Good Trouble: Reclaiming Our Democracy, Demanding Social Justice.”

“This year, with the passing of the Honorable John Lewis, the term ‘Good Trouble,’ which he coined, has been included in the theme,” says Audrey Bentley, Senior Outreach Coordinator with MSU’s Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives. “We continue to strive for more progress, change, and inclusion in community, governance, justice, and education. We hope this year’s celebration will inspire and renew learning and growth on our campus and beyond.”

Governors claim the federal government “botched” vaccine distribution

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Governor Gretchen Whitmer, together with the governors of Wisconsin and Minnesota, are calling on the federal government to allow states to buy their own doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

This comes after Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar promised on Tuesday to release millions of vaccine doses that had been held in reserve to help states ramp up distribution. The Washington Post reported tonight that, when Azar made that promise, the reserve had already been exhausted and the new surge states had been preparing for would not happen.
