EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) – East Lansing’s undefeated boys’ basketball team is our 6 Sports Team of the Week. The Trojans actually say being our team of the week was one of their season goals.
What a season Steve Finamore’s squad is having 13-and-0, Jay Sarkar has more on the hottest team in town.
Facing a resilient Everett team in a tough road environment, the East Lansing Trojans notched a 64-60 win last Friday to go 13-0, but you’d never know the team is undefeated if you spoke to their coach.
“Every day we come to practice our record is 0-0 we never act like we’re undefeated we never act like we’re in first place, but we compete every day,” said Coach Steve Finamore, East Lansing Boys Basketball.
The Trojans are a close knit unit, and they say that certainly has played a role in their success thus far.
“Since we all basically grew up together um the team chemistry thing came along just fine um really faster than normal teams so the team chemistry is a big part of our success this season” said Brandon Johns, sophomore forward, East Lansing.
While the Trojans are ecstatic to be undefeated at this point in the season, they have loftier goals in mind, like winning the program’s first state title since 1958.
“I don’t really care too much about going undefeated cause if you go undefeated but we don’t reach our ultimate goal of winning a state championship, it doesn’t really mean that much in the end,” said Caleb Hoekstra, senior forward, East Lansing.
While the quest for a state title is their ultimate goal, Steve Finamore believes what’s most important is that his players truly embody what it means to be a team.
“They care about their teammates success it’s not about one guy scoring all the points or one guy getting all the playing time, from 1 – 13 on our roster those guys all care about each other,” said Coach Finamore.
Congratulations to the East Lansing Trojans, our 6 Sports Team of the Week.
