A brief history of basketball

The U.S. Census Bureau is getting in on the Final Four festivities with some population stats and fun facts about basketball.

In December of 1891, James Naismith, a physical education teacher at the YMCA invented basketball using a soccer ball and a peach basket. In 1893, he replaced the peach basket with an iron hoopsand a hammock-style basket. Ten years later the open-ended nets still used today were put in place, until that point the ball had to be retrieved after every basket.

According to the Library of Congress, the first college basketball game was played on January 18, 1896 and in 1963 the first college games were broadcast on national TV.

The women’s Final Four tournament starts Friday, April 5th with the national championship game on Sunday, April 7th.

Spartans are the population underdog this Saturday with nearly 50,000 people in East Lansing while Lubbock, Texas which is the home of the Red Raiders has more than 250,000 people.

The men’s Final Four tournament is on Saturday April 6th and the national championship game is on Monday April 8th.
