A look at design plans for East Lansing Park District project

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- - New plans for a major East Lansing project call for new apartment buildings and a hotel.

The project is part of the city's "Park District Project." The sites where the proposed buildings would go up used to be sites of blight. They're now vacant lots, but there's hope that will change.

The design plans by Convexity Properties show what downtown East Lansing could look like in the next few years. The plans call for a 13-story apartment and retail building at the corner of Abbott Road and Grand River Avenue. Just to the west, a 10-story "Graduate Hotel" would go up, if the plans are approved.

"A graduate hotel is a brand that tailors itself towards college communities," Tim Dempsey, East Lansing's Director of Planning, Building & Development said. "And then what they do is they create kind of a unique theme for every community that they're in."

Slightly north of those two sites, at the corner of Evergreen Road and Valley Court, a second apartment building would go up. This building would be five stories.

Dempsey said Convexity Properties hopes to get through the approval process by this fall, and start building early 2019. He said there are some questions about fewer parking spaces, but said the project could be huge for the city.

"When you look at the Center City project underway right now, and then to have this corner redeveloped as well, it's really gonna alter the skyline of the city as well as how downtown functions," he said.

A public hearing for the project will be scheduled at an East Lansing City Council meeting Tuesday. 6 News will let you know when that meeting will occur.
