LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – Attorney General Bill Schuette has released his annual list of top ten complaints to mark the 18th annual Consumer Protection week.
The list is made up from around 9,000 complaints filed with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection team in 2015. This list was released with hopes that it will help educate consumers on scams and issues.
1. Credit and Financial concerns: The top concern for 9 years straight, there were close to 1,130 complaints in areas for debt collection to mortgage brokering. Schuette does have a consumer alert on Debt Collection and Debt Collection Scams
2. Telecommunications, Cable and Satellite TV: Complaints about telemarketing, robocalls, wireless communications and TV services have risen on the list, with more then 900 complaints
3 Retail: Merchandise quality, warranty and pricing dispute complaints were higher on the list from last year
4.Motor Vehicle and Automobiles: Also higher on the list then last year are complaints over used and new car dealers, repair shops and car bodies
5.Internet: Half of these complaints involved online purchases, but also complaints involving fraudulent emails and issues with internet service providers rose on the list as well, with more then 500 complaints.
6 Personal Service Providers: Complaints regarding Dating services, health and fitness organizations and beauty shops stayed on their same place on the list
7 Landlord and Tenant: Mostly involving complaints about apartment owners and managers, this rose a little bit on the list and involved more then 400 complaints
8 Gasoline, Fuel and Energy: This was lower on the list then previous years, it was attributed to lower prices at the pump
9 Contractors: Up a spot from last year are complaints about about landscaping and construction services
10 Health Service Providers: Complaints about health service providers are also down from last year
In addition to releasing the list, the Attorney General’s office will also be hosting two free seminars on phone, mail and e-mail scams in honor of Consumer Protection Week.
One is in Detroit on March 7th at the Cadillac Place in room L150, the other is in Lansing on March 8th at the G. Mennen Williams Auditorium
Both Events will be from 12:05 p.m. – 12:50 p.m.
