FRANKFORT, MICH. – Anyone looking to make a trip out to see the Lakes in the near future, please remember to remain safe.

The Coast Guard is urging people stay off of breakwalls, jetties, and low piers during hazardous weather.

This was prompted by a recent incident involving two people being swept from a breakwall do to high wind and low tide.

The Coast Guard responded when it received a report that two people were swept off a breakwall along Lake Michigan in Benzie County about 30 miles west of Traverse City.

The Coast Guard says weather conditions at the time, waves up to 10 feet and winds up to 35 mph, so it could not send a boat.

A crew from Station Frankfort drove to the breakwall and discovered one person was able to get out of the water and threw a life ring to the second person and pulled him to safety.
