Community calls for end to gun violence

Members of the greater-Lansing community came together Tuesday to call for an end to gun violence.

The group, Guns Down America held a discussion to talk about where the United States, and Michigan, are now, and where both need to go as it relates to preventing gun violence.

People who spoke say the issue is important because of the number of mass shootings the nation has seen over the years. They added it’s everyone’s responsibility to try and stop the next tragedy from happening.

“Just because there hasn’t been a mass shooting in your school, or no one has committed suicide by a gun in your community, that you know of, doesn’t mean this isn’t everyone’s problem,” Linda Brundage, Executive Director of the Michigan Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence said.

And it’s because of mass shootings that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh and the Chabad of Poway synagogue near San Diego, as well as many other acts of gun violence that have plagued the U.S. that people in Lansing came together Tuesday to say “enough.”

“We can’t wait,” Brundage said. “It’s not if there will be another mass shooting. It’s when, and where.”

Activists, as well as State Representative Kara Hope, spoke at the event Tuesday. Hope discussed a package of bills introduced to keep guns out of the hands of people who are at risk of harming themselves or others.

“Those would basically allow close friends, family members, romatic partners, to petition the court to have someone’s firearms removed if it’s shown that that person poses a credible threat of violence,” she said.

Brundage said everyone needs to do their part to prevent another tragedy from happening.

“Everyone can call their legislator. Everyone can go to Lansing and testify,” she said. “Get involved. Talk to your neighbors. Share your ideas. Form small groups to talk about it.”
