Community gathers for World AIDS Day

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Studies show that more than 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV.
That’s why those across the world are spreading awareness today in light of World AIDS Day.
It’s a disease that doesn't discriminate based on age, gender, or race.
“HIV impacts anyone, anyone of any socioeconomic background, any race, any gender can contract the disease,” said Fiza Irfan of the Lansing Area AIDS Network.
That’s why those with the Lansing Area AIDS Network want people to stay informed about HIV/AIDS and know their status.
“It's a new world for people who are living with a positive HIV status,” said Elizabeth Fleming, a medical case manager with the organization.
Fleming says when HIV first became apparent decades ago, there weren't many medical resources to combat it.
But even though there is still no cure, Fleming says there are ways to prevent spreading HIV and to keep from getting the virus in the first place.
“If you're adherent to your meds, you're not going to transmit the infection to anyone,” said Fleming.
Some risks to get HIV/AIDS include having more than one sexual partner, injecting drugs, or having an STD.
But despite this, Lansing Area AIDS Network officials want those diagnosed to know that they're not alone.
“It's very important to let individuals who are living with HIV know they are 100 percent supported, especially here in Lansing,” said Irfan.
