LANSING, MI (WLNS) – Congressman Mike Bishop was back in the district today, visiting Emergent BioSolutions in Lansing.
When it comes to chemical threats or infectious diseases worldwide — Lansing’s Emergent BioSolutions is at the forefront of saving lives.
And U.S. Congressman Mike Bishop is thankful to have the plan in our backyard.
“It’s wonderful to know that we have, right here in Lansing, Michigan, a company that does so much, not just for this country, but around the world,” Bishop said.
The 8th District congressman took a tour of Emergent’s Lansing facility, which makes BioThrax — the only FDA-licensed anthrax vaccine.
It can protect U.S. soldiers if the bacteria are used against them in warfare.
“Thank goodness for companies like Emergent, who are a step ahead of everybody in this area,” Bishop said.
And though Bishop’s getting a closer look at how it’s made — all eyes are on him.
“We’re honored and excited to have Congressman Bishop here,” said Dino Muzzin, the Lansing Site Head and General Manager of Emergent BioSolutions.
Muzzin says having elected officials on their side is a good thing.
“For us it’s critically important, so to have our supporters that can bring up issues on Capitol Hill — we really appreciate that,” Muzzin said.
One issue right now — is making sure enough BioThrax is sent to the Strategic National Stockpile.
And by talking to employees and learning about the science, the congressman hopes to continue the relationship.
“We don’t know what kind of weapons are going to be used against us — and it’s important for us to stay ahead of the game,” Bishop said.
Ahead of the game — and saving lives.
Emergent BioSolutions says their mission is to protect and enhance 50 million lives by 2025.
