DEVELOPING: Officials investigate officer-involved shooting in Charlotte

News

CHARLOTTE, Mich. (WLNS) We have new details tonight as officials investigate an officer-involved shooting. It happened on the 100-block of 4th Street near Cochran Avenue in Charlotte.

Michigan State Police say someone called into the Eaton County Sheriff’s Dispatch about a fight, but when sheriff’s deputies and Charlotte Police got to the scene, that’s when shots were fired.

“It was a domestic situation between two people obviously who knew each other,” said Lt. Darren Green with the Michigan State Police.

Moments after they arrived on the scene in the 100-block of 4th Street, investigators say shots were fired by a Charlotte police officer.

The person shot, who is not a law enforcement officer, was taken to the hospital.

Lt. Green says whenever an officer-involved shooting takes place, another department has to investigate, so that’s where they come in.

“It’s procedure that once a department is on scene, and there’s officers on scene obviously and shots have been fired that they request an outside agency to come do an investigation regarding that situation where officers were on scene and shots were fired,” said Green.

Police had the entire street blocked off for more than five hours, but for now, they’re going to continue figuring out exactly what happened.

“It’ll be several hours that our investigators, detective, and crime lab will be out here doing a thorough investigation of what transpired,” said Green.

The victim’s injuries are unknown at this time and we’re expecting to get more information about this officer-involved shooting tomorrow.
