Doctor shares tips for spring allergies

JACKSON, MI (WLNS) – Spring has sprung in mid-Michigan and it’s time to enjoy the warmer weather.

But if you have allergies, beware.

This is the time of year when your allergies can make you feel the most miserable

“It’s just like my head feels all stuffy, and my nose is all runny and just like ehh! Just icky,” said Aaron Carlson, Jackson.

“I sleep with my window open because it’s hot in there so when I wake up I feel like I’m sick,” said Haley Turk, Jackson.

Doctors say allergies are worse just after April because of the increase in pollen in the air.

“It can be pollen from trees, grasses, weeds, flowers, or it can be different. You can also have reactions to foods, different people can have different reactions to different things,” said Maria Del Carmen Soto, DO, Allegiance Family Medicine.

But treatment is readily available.

Head to your doctor’s office and if needed they can refer you to a specialist.

“If there are any complications or if there are some really severe symptoms then we usually do a referral to an allergist,” said Dr. Maria Del Carmen Soto.

In the meantime doctors recommend staying inside during peak pollen hours, which are 5 – 10 a.m.

Doctors also recommend washing your hands and clothes regularly and even showering after spending time outside.

That way the pollen will be removed from yourself and your clothes.
